To preserve Tour's African roots, his label, Hastu Records , was created by a Songhay journalist named Alaoui Touré, who was born in the Fulfulde village of Kaolack in Chad. The first releases were the albums Ali Farka Tour (1979) and Tantoura Tour (1980), the latter of which was produced by Ghanaian musician Sekou Bambata, whom Tour had met on a Guinean recording session in the 1970s. Alhassane Touré, Alaoui Touré's younger brother, was instrumental in the birth of the label.
He died of a heart attack in Bamako on 4 December 1995, aged 55. His death left a gap in West African popular music that was not filled until 2001, when the fusion of African and French pop music known as rai gained popularity.
Unlike Hooker, who became known for his distinctive and charismatic stage presence, Tour was a shy, introverted man who didn't like to perform in front of large audiences. He was often accompanied by a small band, which included drummers from his native Mali, as well as pianist Paul Mounir Sissoko, who played on a few of his later recordings. Tour was also well versed in several African spiritual rituals. He could play the traditional West African Balo griot instrument, the kora, and played the double-headed tabla . On one of his early albums, Jiye Ou Man (Live), he played it with a pair of triangles.
